One of the primary causes of pain is restriction within your soft tissues, which can be improved through therapies that extend your range of motion. Myofascial release is a standard treatment used to improve the functionality of the body. Pain related to the fascia – a bodily network of connective tissue – arises from incidents of trauma, poor posture, disc herniation, chronic inflammation, and other disorders.

Myofascial pain has long been a source of ambiguity in medical diagnoses. Because restrictions in the fascia are not visible on the images produced by X-rays or MRI machines, myofascial stretching is often overlooked as a treatment. It is crucial to be aware of the extent to which pain and a wide variety of physical dysfunctions can manifest via myofascial restrictions.

Myofascial therapy & focusing on fascia to relieve your pain

Myofascial therapy is the use of safe, low-impact stretching to loosen the fibers of the body and reduce the pain of myofascial pain syndrome – a designation for chronic pain that is particularly extreme at the trigger points (bundles of tissue that are taut and easily irritated).

According to Spine-Health, the fascia is a connective layer that extends from the area just under the skin to two layers farther within the body, running from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet.  The fascia within a healthy body is relaxed and flexible. When restrictions occur, the stress on the tissue begins to build and can reach forces as high as 1 ton for each square inch. The restrictions that myofascial stretching are intended to alleviate can occur in any of the three layers – the superficial fascia, the deep fascia, and/or the deepest fascia.

Conditions that can often be helped with myofascial release

Myofascial release (MFR) therapy stretches muscles so that they become longer and more pliable. It can help to benefit recovery from a variety of health conditions. Often it is used when a patient has reduced range of motion after experiencing an injury or if chronic pain is present in any soft tissues of the body. This type of treatment can also be highly effective for temporal-mandibular joint (TMJ) disorder and various repetitive strain disorders. Some even find it effective at reducing migraine attack severity.
